In retrospect, the Cabinet, in its Emergency Meeting of the Estimates of Revenue and Expenditure for the Fiscal Year 2024, held on Wednesday 15th November 2023, approved the increment of transport and residential allowances for Civil Servants.
This was confirmed in a 9th January release that was issued by the Personnel Management Office, which is under the Ministry of Public Service, Administrative Reform, Policy Coordination and Delivery
The dispatch, addressed to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, states: “Cabinet considered and approved the increment of Transport Allowance from D1, 500 to D2, 500 and Residential Allowance from D1, 700 to D3, 000 as proposed by the Minister of Public Service, Administrative Reforms, Policy Coordination and Delivery.”
However, the high expectations of the struggling beneficiaries have been dashed and government has reportedly backtracked from the intended move.
