As the world marks Senior Citizens Day on October 1st, the University of Senior Citizen Gambia is preparing a nationwide outreach to recognise the contributions of older persons and address the challenges they face.

The initiative will kick off in the Greater Banjul Area with visits to homes and care centers, including the Bakoteh Home for the Elderly, before extending to all regions of the country.

The University of Senior Citizens Gambia, part of a global network and active in more than 200 countries, is championing efforts to create a positive and inclusive environment for older people. Since its establishment in The Gambia in 2019, the organisation has brought together men and women aged 60 and above from diverse backgrounds to share experiences, promote education, and improve the quality of life for seniors.

The Gambian chapter is headed by Mrs. Jainaba Jallow Njie, president, with Mrs. Juka Jabang as vice president, Mr. Dembo Badjie as secretary general, and Alh Seh Tejan Nyang as finance director.

This year’s Senior Citizens Day commemoration will be launched with a series of visits across the country to better understand the daily realities of older persons. Organisers say the initiative will allow them to collect firsthand information about the needs, challenges, and aspirations of seniors forming the basis of a national database.

“We want to reach as many senior citizens as possible, listen to their stories, and ensure they feel included in shaping the future,” said Mrs. Njie. “Senior citizens gave their best to this country in their youth, and now it is our responsibility to give back to them.”

The outreach program will begin in the Greater Banjul Area and Kanifing Municipality before moving to the West Coast Region and eventually all regions of The Gambia. The organisation is working closely with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), as well as relevant ministries and government departments to ensure the initiative has lasting impact.

Beyond visits, the University of Senior Citizens aims to strengthen solidarity among older persons and provide platforms where they can share wisdom, knowledge, and expertise with the younger generation.

“Senior citizens should never be forgotten,” Mrs. Njie emphasised. “Together, we can build a future where they are celebrated, supported, and respected.”
