The landmark move came on the heels of issuance of a permit to GACH Global Trading by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources.
The temporal permit given will allow GACH to store huge quantity of basalt on the former Lateriten Quarry utilised for the OIC Road Construction located on the fringes of the Salagi Forest
“The permit comes with a number of restrictions so as to minimise damage to the surrounding forests and to the environment in general. Gach Global will also carry out some rehabilitation and backfilling of the site to make it fit for use,” according to a news release from the GACH Global.
“GACH Global has completed all necessary procedures and fulfilled the conditions attached to this temporal permit. Therefore, the claim that GACH is illegally occupying the land and is engaging in destruction of the forest is mischevous and unfounded.”
“The area is a public area and all are at liberty to visit and confirm the current activity undertaken in an environmentally safe manner and on the discontinued quarry site.”
“In the meantime, we expect to soon provide a secure supply of basalt to support national and private infrastructure projects in the country and solve the decades problem of dependence on basalt from Senegal.”
