The Minister for Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters, Hon. Musa Drammeh, has disclosed that The Gambia’s fisheries and aquaculture sector remains one of the strongest pillars of the national economy, directly and indirectly supporting over 200,000 people across the country.

He said this on Saturday during the National Oysters Day celebration held at the Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute in Kanifing, where government officials, development partners, United Nations agencies, and women oyster harvesters gathered to reflect on progress in the sector.

Hon. Drammeh said the fisheries sector currently employs more than 25,000 women and men in coastal communities, with oyster harvesting alone supporting hundreds of women directly and many more indirectly through processing, transportation and sales.

He added that the sector contributes about 12 percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product.

He noted that in the past, oyster harvesting received little attention despite its importance to food security, livelihoods and the economy, but said recent years have seen renewed commitment from government and partners to change the narrative.

According to him, scientific research conducted by the ministry has helped guide oyster production, including studies on spawning periods and suitable conditions for sustainable farming without damaging mangrove ecosystems.

He also highlighted the establishment of the TRY Oyster Women’s Association, which he said has benefited from training, equipment and technical support to strengthen its operations.

The minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to protecting wetlands and mangrove forests, describing them as critical for biodiversity, coastal protection and climate resilience.

He further outlined plans to modernise the sector through improved infrastructure, expanded market access and support for value addition and entrepreneurship.

Fisheries minister called for continued collaboration among government, partners and communities to strengthen the fisheries sector, empower women and ensure sustainable national development.
