In a press release issued Thursday, the Ministry extended sincere condolences to families and loved ones affected, and said it stands in solidarity with those awaiting news about relatives.
“At this stage, the identities and nationalities of the persons reportedly on board have not been officially verified,” the Ministry stated. “While preliminary information suggests that the vessel may have departed from The Gambia, the Ministry is engaging with the Spanish authorities and other relevant stakeholders to establish the circumstances of the incident and verify the information currently available.”
Gov't in contact with Spanish authorities and partners
According to the statement, the Ministry is liaising with Spanish authorities and, through its National Focal Point under the Rabat Process, is in contact with partners including the International Organization for Migration, IOM, and the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, “to facilitate information-sharing and contribute to efforts to clarify the situation.”
The Ministry acknowledged the distress and uncertainty being experienced by families whose relatives may be missing.
Call for caution on unverified information
It urged the public and media to exercise caution regarding information that has not been officially confirmed.
“The Ministry therefore urges the public and all concerned to exercise caution regarding information that has not been officially verified, as inaccurate reports may cause further distress to affected families,” it said. “Further information will be communicated, as appropriate, once the relevant facts have been established and verified.”
Renewed warning on irregular migration
The Ministry also reiterated concerns about “the continued risks associated with dangerous and irregular migration journeys” and stressed the need for cooperation to promote safe and regular migration and protect vulnerable migrants from exploitation.
“The Ministry extends its deepest sympathies to all families and communities affected by this incident and appreciates the understanding, patience and cooperation of the public as efforts to establish the facts continue,” the release concluded.
This is the latest in a series of reported tragedies on the Atlantic route from West Africa to the Canary Islands, a journey that has claimed many Gambian lives over the years.
Authorities have not released further details on the number of people involved or the exact location of the incident.
