Reports reaching this paper from Wuli in the Upper River Region revealed that the National Assembly Member for Wuli East, Hon Bekai Camara, passed away early yesterday morning.
According to reports, Hon. Camara died at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital following a brief illness.
The body will be laid at the National Assembly chambers today Monday at 9:30a.m. before being transported to the URR, to be laid to rest on Tuesday morning at his home
Meanwhile, as a result of his untimely death, the APRC Sare Ngai ward by-election victory celebration scheduled for yesterday Sunday has been cancelled.
This has come after organizers of the victory celebration have slaughtered two bulls and begun receiving guests from all over the region. They were however shocked by a call from the Regional Governor's office informing them of Hon. Camara's demise.
Reacting to the death, Governor Omar Khan of the URR described the late Bekai as a great man, and that his death is a great loss to the nation.
Colly Bah, APRC constituency chairman for Wuli West, said the late Bekai had always been serving them as their National Assembly Member, despite he was from Wuli East.
Prior to his election to parliament as National Assembly Member for Wuli East in 2007, the late Hon. Camara worked with the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) as Assistant Producer.
He one time served as Programme Assistant Environment Education and Communication at the National Environment Agency (NEA).
Hon. Camara also served as Vice Chairman, National Assembly Select Committee on environment and was at one time president of the Network of Journalists on Population and Development.
He was also one time President of the Gambia Association of Physical Disabled and Chairman of the Commission on Policy and Legislation, West African Network of Parliaments on Environment and Climate Change.
