Traditional Chinese Food Therapy Exhibition

On 18 October, 2026, the 24th China Medical Team in The Gambia participated in the China Day celebration at the West African Food Festival, showcasing traditional Chinese food therapy and sharing the cultural heritage of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with the Gambian public.

The event was attended by Abdoulie Jobe, The Gambia's Minister of Tourism and Culture; Momodou Singhateh, Principal of the Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute (GTHI); and Zhao Shangsen, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in The Gambia.

During the celebration, the China Medical Team presented five traditional Chinese soups and beverages: Angelica, Ginger and Lamb Soup; Snow Fungus Soup with Goji Berries; Traditional Sour Plum Drink; Mung Bean Soup; and Chrysanthemum and Cassia Seed Tea.

These traditional recipes reflect the Chinese philosophy of food therapy, which emphasizes balanced nutrition, seasonal eating, and the relationship between diet and well-being.

During the event, Dr. Zhang Bo, a member of the 24th China Medical Team, introduced the ingredients, cultural significance, and traditional uses of the five soups and beverages to guests and local visitors, providing an opportunity to experience traditional Chinese food culture.

Angelica Ginger and Lamb Soup is a classic prescription dating back to the Han Dynasty. Recorded in a Chinese medical text from around 200 AD, it remains widely prepared in households across China and is the oldest recipe on display, embodying the traditional Chinese principle of warming and nourishing the body. Snow Fungus Soup with Goji Berries is a beloved traditional Chinese dessert known to moisten dryness, especially suitable for autumn. Classic Sour Plum Drink and Mung Bean Cooling Soup are refreshing summer beverages, while Chrysanthemum and Cassia Seed Tea follows the Chinese herbal tea tradition and is valued for easing eye strain from prolonged screen use.

Dr. Zhang also spoke with local media about the cultural background of Chinese food therapy and its role in everyday life. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, Chinese medicinal cuisine combines traditional medicinal herbs with food ingredients to create carefully prepared dishes that are both flavorful and traditionally valued for their health-supporting properties. It offers not only delicious flavors but also potential wellness benefits. Traditional Chinese dietary practices emphasize not only the nutritional value of food but also the relationship between diet, seasonal changes, lifestyle, and well-being.

Through food, a universal language shared by people around the world, the China Medical Team offered visitors an opportunity to discover and appreciate the richness of Chinese culture.

As the West African Food Festival came to a close, the traditional Chinese food therapy exhibition marked a meaningful occasion for cultural exchange and mutual understanding.

The participation of the 24th China Medical Team highlighted the unique charm of Chinese food culture and further strengthened friendship and cultural ties between China and The Gambia.
