The Gambia wrestling fraternity yesterday paid their last respect to their fallen colleague the late Fatoumata Semega Janneh who past away last Sunday and was laid to rest on Monday 14 January 2013 at the Dippa Kunda Cemetery.
Speaking to Pointsport at the end of the burial, Alpha Jallow, member of the Gambia Wrestling Journalist Association (GAWJA), on behalf of the association showed his heartfelt condolence over the demise of Fatoumata Semega Janneh whom he describes as one of the few pillars that stood firmly in the promotion and development of Gambian wrestling.
Alpha revealed by saying that Fatoumata Semega Janneh had been so instrumental in wrestling, which the association GAWJA, prioritized.
He said without the promoters, their association and wrestlers would not come to existence.
He added: “Her demise is a big loss in the wrestling fraternity, because she was at the fore front in promoting wrestling. We lost her off our sights but she remains in our hearts for ever, she was a heroine. A lot of wrestlers benefited from her stages she held.”
He said Fatoumata Semega Janneh was very interactive, corporative, informative and helpful to the association.
“She called members of the wrestling fraternity, journalists at her home during the previous Ramadan where she gave out charity of sugar to all participants. This shows that we worked hand in hand with her in promoting wrestling in the country. May her soul rest in perfect peace,” Alpha prayed.
Fatou Semega Janneh staged her first competition on 8 July last year and her last was held on Saturday 12 January 2013, a day before her demise.
“Now, could there be anyone to replace her to take wrestling forward?”
Gambian wrestlers such as Valdo and Tyson also expressed their condolence to the family of the deceased.
