An official of the GFF told The Point their arrest is in connection with Gambia’s disqualification from all CAF competitions for age cheating. Our sources added that they have been charged with negligence.
Gambia fielded five over-aged players on the 6th of April 2014 in Monrovia against Liberia in the first leg of the CAF U-20 qualifiers. Gambia defeated Liberia in the first leg of the Under-20 qualifying rounds by 1-0.
The Gambian Government suspended the Executive on Wednesday 7th May for three months, pending investigation into the whole saga.
The detained officials are Mustapha Kebbeh president of GFF, Buba ‘Star’ Janneh first vice president, Kebba Touray second vice president, Basiru Bajo third vice president, Abass Bah secretary-general to the GFF, Ebrima Manneh technical director, Bori Darboe Executive Member and Marcel Mendy who was the secretary-general of the former Normalisation Committee and is now Deputy Executive Director of the National Sports Council.
The sources said they were asked to write statements to explain how the Gambia fielded five over-aged players in the U-20 CAF competition.
Meanwhile, a five-member committee was set up last Wednesday to run the affairs of the GFF for the next three months.
Lamin Sanneh a permanent secretary at the ministry of Lands was appointed chairman of the committee, but he has declined the offer, Sanneh told The Point in our Friday edition.
The GFF officials have been detained since Friday. They were elected on 31st July 2013 at the Paradise Suites Hotel.
