The Super Nawettan zonal football competition was started back in the early 90s with eight zones, namely Banjul, Bakau, Brikama, Gunjur, Lamin, Serrekunda East, Serrekunda West and Sukuta.
The competition is now competed by twelve teams after the Normalization Committee of GFA decided to recognize Brufut, Manjai, Serrekunda Central, Barra, Essau and Mayamba.
Banjul, Bakau and Serrekunda East are the household names in the Super Nawettan having won the competition more than any other zones since its inception in the 90s and have produced some of the brilliant display of skills and talents by the participating zones. They also attract large crowd from the Greater Banjul area and there satellite areas.
Many football fans in the country lament that the Super Nawettan is far more competitive than the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) national first and second division leagues, which produce low turnout, slow and scrappy football.
The GFF first and second division coaches use the Super Nawettan to scout good players for their respective teams and most of the Gambian players plying their trade in Europe and MLS all played famous super nawettan competition before their departure abroad.
The super nawettan has also produced vital players for the various Gambian National teams ranging from U-17, to U-20, U-23 and the senior national team.
The 2013 edition of the Super Nawettan is expected to be sponsored by Skye Bank Gambia Limited.
