Gunjur FC are through to the Gambia Football Association (GFA) Triangular qualifiers following their 5-4 post-match penalty shootout victory over Sifoe, after a goalless in regulation time of the West Coast Region third division qualifiers final game played at the Brikama Box Bar Mini-stadium on Sunday.
The well-contested game was characterised by delightful exhibition of skills and panache as both teams launched series of assaults in front of each other’s goal mouth but the first half ended goalless.
As actions resumed in the second half, both sides brought in several fresh legs but it was Gunjur FC whose substitutions paid dividends as they created numerous goal-scoring opportunities through winger wizard Bakary Daffeh, alias Kanu, in the 55th, 65th and 70th minutes of the game but those chances went away.
Substitutes Saikouba Manneh, alias Safety, and Foday Joof could have scored for Gunjur FC in the 77th and 79th minute of the game but those chances also were denied by Sifoe goalkeeper Modou Secka.
Sifoe, on the other hand, had clear goal-scoring chance when striker Dominic Mendy slashed through Gunjur’s defence line but he was denied by Gunjur goalkeeper Ebrima Cham in the dying minute, thus the game ended goalless.
This pushed the game into post-match penalty shootout, which ended 5-4 in favour of Gunjur, who are now to represent West Coast Region in the GFA triangular qualifiers later this year against teams in Kanifing Municipality and Banjul.
