Good news from a distant land

The recent AU award received by The Gambia “for its achievement in gaining access to clean and drinkable water within a 15 minute walk” is good news from a distant land, as it has once again shown that our nation is on track in achieving better access to clean and drinkable water in the region.

During the 25th ordinary session of the Assembly of heads of state and government of the African Union in Johannesburg, South Africa, where the award ceremony was held, the Gambian leader and government were highly commended for according high priority to safe drinking water, and for remaining committed to ensuring that the masses of the people in the country have access to clean and drinkable water in both rural and urban areas.

We would like to also commend our President and his government for being steadfast in ensuring that we, as a nation, continue to get access to clean and drinkable water in increasing numbers of settlements across our urban and rural areas.

We would also like to appreciate the efforts of our development partners, who are contributing in one way or another to help us register such an achievement.

Clean and drinkable water is one of our most vital resources, as it is the most precious nutrient to life and health. Clean and potable water can be used for drinking, cooking, bathing, cleaning, and so on.

We should, therefore, keep ensuring that we support clean water initiatives, and any measures that would help us maintain clean and drinkable water for our population both in the rural and urban areas.

The private sector and our development partners should continue to lend a hand to government initiatives that are geared towards providing clean and portable water to our population, for the quality of our water is directly linked to the quality of our lives.

“The quality of our water is directly linked to the quality of our lives.”
