The first round fixture has been released yesterday for the twelve-team Gambia Football Association First Division League.
Fans are expected to gather at the D9.6 million Banjul Mini-stadium ground called KG5, on Saturday to watch the reigning GFA division one league champions Gambia Ports Authority and FA Cup winners Gamtel, in what is likely to produce an exciting curtain raiser super cup match, which will eventually pave the way for the commencement of the league proper the following day.
According to information contained in the released GFA first division fixtures sent to Pointsport yesterday, the championship proper will begin with a crucial game when Real De Banjul meet the Academy boys Samger at the rejuvenated Banjul Mini-stadium on Sunday March 6 to be followed by other crunch encounters between Interior and Gamtel at Brikama Box Bar Mini-stadium and between and Brikama United and Bakau giant killers Steve Biko at the Serrekunda West Mini-stadium.
Matches continue on Sunday March 6 when Wallidan will take on Bakau United at the popular Serrekunda East Mini-Stadium.
The Gambia Ports Authority will begin the defence of their last year crown with a league match against Africell at the West Mini-stadium on Wednesday, while the military boys Armed Forces will rub shoulders with Young Africans at the East Park the same day to wrap up the week one fixtures.
Bakau United and Real De Banjul will enter week two fixtures with two crunch top tier encounters when they will face an uphill task of achieving the desired results against Samger and Gamtel at the Serrekunda West and Manjai fields respectively on Saturday 12 March. Wallidan and Steve Biko will come face to face with a game to be played on March 12 at the Father Gough Sports Complex in Manjai Kunda, which was recently the centre of a controversial dispute.
Sunday’s matches in the week two fixtures feature Armed Forces and Africell at the Manjai football field. Young African will take on Coach Ebrima Manneh’s Interior the same day at the KG5 Mini-stadium, while the last game in week two is expected to see Brikama United entertain the Gambia Ports Authority at the Brikama Box Bar Mini-stadium.
