Abuko Upper Basic School yesterday defeated Saint Therese's 2 straight sets in the opening game of the 2010 Gambega sponsored Gambia Secondary School Sports Association (GSSSA) Inter-Secondary Schools Volleyball Championship, at Saint Therese's Upper Basic School Volleyball Lawn.
Saint Augustine Upper Basic School Volleyball team collected three points after their opponent Brikama Upper Basic School Volleyball team failed to turn up for the game.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, held at Saint Therese's Upper Basic School in Kanifing, the President of Gambia Secondary School Sports Association (GSSSA), Martin Gomez, applauded Gambega for sponsoring the tournament, which will go a long away towards promoting sports in the country, especially at the grassroots level.
He urged them to take sports seriously, because of its monetary gains and benefits to the nation.
The Development Officer at the National Sports Council, Abdou Aziz Tiwao Mendy, said the tournament will enable students to interact and promote friendship among them. He noted that it would also develop sports in our schools.
Human Resource Manager Gambega Company Limited, Sarja Sambou, said Gambega which represents Coca-Cola in The Gambia have been contributing and will continue to contribute towards the development of sports.
Another speaker at the occasion was Secretary-General of the Gambia Secondary School Sports Association, Alagie S Darboe, who expressed delight at the sponsorship package from Gambega Company Limited for their volleyball and football tournaments, respectively.
