There was famine in Israel as a result of a siege by the Syrian army and prophet Elisha had predicted that the siege would be lifted soon and food will be made available.
Outside the city gates were four famished lepers who also were feeling the pinch. Death was staring them in the face. They weighed the odds and resolved that if they made efforts to enter the city, death awaited them there. Any attempt to visit the Syrian camp also would be putting their lives at risk. They settled for the second option.
As they approached the Syrian camp, they observed that it was empty. Its occupants had fled after they overheard noises which sounded like an army attack.
To their surprise there was enough booty. "They ate and drank, and carried away silver, gold and clothes, and went off and hid them." (2 Kgs. 7:8b) They went in again and did the same.
Then their consciences struck them. "We're not doing right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let's go at once and report this to the royal guard." (2 Kgs. 7:9)
Reflect on their move for a minute.
What have you been doing or are still doing that is improper that you must put an end to before you get into trouble?
Self-examination is a first step in righteousness. Do not wait until you are found out.
Have the heart of these lepers!
