GFF, MoYS bid farewell to Gambia U-20 team

The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) on Saturday evening bade farewell to The Gambia U-20 team ahead of their participation to the 2024 West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone A U-20 football tournament to be hosted in Monrovia, Liberia.

Addressing the Young Scorpions at Football Hotel in Old Yundum, GFF 1st Vice President of the GFF, Bakary K. Jammeh, emphasised the importance of teamwork while urging the players to take inspiration from their predecessors who were finalists in both the WAFU and AFCON finals and eventually reached to the second round of the FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina.

Jammeh assured the team of GFF's unflinching support throughout their journey at all times adding that the team will play an international friendly match against hosts Liberia on 10th September.

He said plans are underway for a second test game before the team's opener against Mauritania on the 17th September 2024.

Acting Executive Director of the National Sports Council (NYC), Mahmud Lamin Jawla, hailed the efforts of the GFF in making sure that U-20 continued to participate in the junior tournament.

Jawla advised the players to be good ambassadors while in Liberia and to give their best on the pitch.

He also assured the players of the Gambia government's commitment to their welfare throughout the campaign.

Technical Director of the GFF, Sang Ndong urged the players to perform up to expectations as they are provided with all the necessary support and preparations needed.

Head Coach of The Gambia U-20 team, Abdoulie Bojang, thanked the GFF for the support while expressing confidence in his side's abilities saying the team will perform to expectations.

The send-off ceremony was also attended by the GFF Finance Director Kemo Ceesay, who also chaired the ceremony.

The team left Banjul for Monrovia, Liberia in the early hours of Sunday, 8th September 2024.
