Gambia slip to Tunisia in AFCON qualifiers

The Gambia yesterday lost to Tunisia 2-1 in their second Group A match of the 2025 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations qualifier played at the Stade El Abdi Jadida.

The Scorpions drew 1-1 with Comoros Islands in their opening group match before locking horns with Tunisia, who beat Madagascar.

Coach Janathan Mckinstry and his Scorpions needed the maximum points to put their 2025 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations qualification on track.

The Gambia fought hard for the vital three points and crafted goal scoring opportunities.

Ali Al Abdi gave Tunisia the lead in the 11th minute of the match.

The Gambia reacted for an equaliser and levelled the scores through striker Ali Sowe in the 14th minute of the match thus the first half ended 1-1.

Upon resumption of the match, The Gambia and Tunisia both injected in several fresh legs to reinforce their attacking tags.

Tunisia dominated The Gambia in the midfield and created many goal scoring opportunities.

Mohammed Ali Ben Ramdhane scored the second goal for Tunisia in the 75th minute of the match, which eventually proved to be the winner for the Tunisians.

The Gambia responded back for an equaliser but to no avail thus the match ended 2-1 in favour of Tunisia.

The win earns Tunisia top-spot in Group A of the 2025 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations qualifier with 6 points after two group matches.

The Gambia and Comoros Islands are both a point.
