The Gambia karate national team has delivered to expectation in the 2026 Karate Open Tournament.
They competed against some of the finest karate talents (kata and kumite athletes) from across the region, displaying exceptional performance throughout the competition.
The Gambia karate national team eventually attained a historic milestone, winning eight medals across nine competitions.
The medals comprise 6 bronze, a gold and a silver.
Vice President of The Gambia Karate Federation, Muhammed Jagana, highlighted the historical achievements of the Gambia karate national team in the recent competition, celebrating the determination of the young athletes.
Jagana stressed how, unlike popular beliefs which link karate with violence, karate instills discipline among the young.
The national referees' chairperson, Eliminate Njie, stated that karate sport is indeed progressing, adding that people are not aware of the progress being made.
Njie revealed that this was why they deemed it necessary to convene the press conference to inform the public of the strides being registered.
He spoke on the need for regular participation in international competitions, as the international exposure enhances standards locally.
He also appealed for support to develop karate in the country.
Kumite and kata national coaches, Master Mbye Nyang and Master Modou Jallow, spoke on the same issue.
Technical Director of The Gambia Karate Federation, Pateh Jobe, congratulated the team for their exceptional performance.
Jobe noted that the milestone attained reflects a collective resolve to develop the art of karate as a sport.
