Secretary general of The Gambia Karate Federation, Sang Gomez, has called for support, especially from the government to develop karate in the country.

Gomez was speaking during a recent press conference held at the Father Farrel Memorial Hall in Westfield.

He said part of the reasons for the press conference is to seek for support.

Gomez highlighted the historic performance of The Gambia national team during the 2026  Karate Open Championship hosted in Senegal.

He stated that The Gambia karate national team have competed against some of the finest karate talents from across the region, clutching eight medals across nine categories (6 bronze, a gold and a silver medal).

Gomez further stated that the team's participation in competitions and other activities requires finances, adding that those who went to Dakar with athletes were not paid.

"Karate is not paying them or feeding their families,” he disclosed, saying: “They did it for their country."
