AFCON qualifiers: Hamza Barry’s last grasp strike earn Gambia vital win over South Sudan

Midfielder Hamza Barry’s last grasp strike has earned The Gambia a vital victory over South Sudan in their 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Scorpions defeated South Sudan 3-2 in their Group G match of the continent’s biannual biggest football showpiece qualifier played at the Sue Canal Stadium in Ismailia, Egypt yesterday.

The Gambia opened the scores in the 4th minute of the match through an own goal by South Sudan defender, Rehan Angier.

South Sudan responded back for an equaliser and levelled the scores through Valentino Yuel in the 21st minute of the match after capitalizing on Captain Omar Colley’s blunder thus the first half ended 1-1.

Upon resumption of the match, The Gambia piled pressure on South Sudan defence line and created several goal scoring opportunities.

Wing wizard Abdoulie Jallow scored the second goal for the Scorpions in the 62nd minute of the match with a fine strike.

South Sudan reacted for an equaliser and levelled matters again through C. Daniel in the 91st minute of the match.

Midfielder Hamza Barry scored the winner for The Gambia in the 96th minute of the match to earn the Scorpions the significant three points.

The victory moves The Gambia to second-place in Group G of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with 9 points.

South Sudan remain bottom-place in Group G of the continent’s biennial biggest football fiesta qualifiers with 3 points after five group matches.
