Members of the Staff Welfare Association (SWA) of The University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET), formerly the Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI), who were protesting amid unpaid allowances among others, have ended their sit-down strike.

The SWA of the USET has reportedly ended its strike after the management of the institution and the SWA reached an agreement.

Officials said the striking teachers have resumed work with immediate effect after four out of their six demands have been met by the management.

A release obtained by The Point and signed by Omar A. Barry, the secretary general of the staff association, stated: “The Staff Welfare Association (SWA) urges all members of staff of the institution to pick up their tools and continue with their normal duties.”

He added: “Similarly, four out of the six points we demanded have been fulfilled and the following payments were made to: I. Credit Union D1,432,036, II. STAFF Welfare Contributions D271,000, III. Performance Allowance D1,132,000, and IV.

“The management with MoHERST will work with GRA to get us Tax Clearance.”

Barry also said: “All those members of staff who have already paid for their clearance should take their receipts to the Accounts office for a refund. The management of the USET is also tasked to come up with a payment plan for our Social Security.”

As for the USET Scale, he went on, “the USET Management and Governing Council are tasked to work on the policy and come up with a pay scale. Until then, SWA and the management of the institution will continue to monitor these developments. We are committed to ensuring that staff welfare is given utmost considerations.”
