The recognition is an acknowledgment of his efforts in enhancing partnership and cooperation amongst national and international organisations in furthering the SDG goals, which aligns with SDG 17.
The Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals are a series of over seventeen related environmental, social and economic objectives formulated in 2015 by the UN General Assembly to serve as shared “blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future."
Amongst the goals are ending poverty, hunger, inequality as well as enhancing health and wellbeing, quality education, responsible consumption and production, innovation and infrastructure, industrial and economic growth, affordable clean energy and clean water and sanitation.
SDG 17 entails “strengthening the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development."
As programme officer for Information Communication Technology and Innovation at the NYC, Bassiru Jaye coordinates the work of NYC creative lab; plans, coordinates, conducts awareness-raising activities related to ICT and innovation through social media, radio and TV station; and also regularly prepares and provides periodic updates to the NYC management.
Nationally and internationally, Basiru has gathered a lot of experience and knowledge in technology. He studied computer science and engineering at the Islamic University of Technology in Bangladesh, as well as partook in professional studies at Bangladesh Infosoft Valley Institute. He also specialised in computer science at the University of The Gambia.
Reacting to the acknowledgment, Mr Jaye wrote on his social media handle: “I am deeply honoured for the recognition as an SDG Champion by UN Gambia for the difference I have been making in advancing the SDG Goals.
He added: “The prestigious recognition came as a result of my efforts in fostering collaboration and cooperation, sharing knowledge, expertise and resources among government agencies, civil society, private sector and national and international organizations to empower youth.”
