Marie Antoinette Corr, general secretary of the Gambia Teachers Union (GTU) has said that young teachers have the creativity, potential and the capacity to make change in the society.

Speaking to young teachers on Tuesday at Paradise Suite Hotel during their general assembly, Madam Corr said: “You have the creativity, the potential and the capacity to make change happen in your schools, your communities and the country at large.

“And so, part of the reason this event is so important is for us to be able to send a message to future generations of teachers, to talented young people all across the country to understand that this is a profession where you have the potential to make more of a difference than just about anything you can go into. You are not only the future, you are the now.”

She said young teachers are also agents of change, creativity, innovation and must be passionate about making the world a better place. “My message to the young teachers is to think beyond your ability, dream beyond your imagination,” she said.

She said Africa is the continent with the youngest population in the world that holds the potential of the future that Africans want.

“When I look at this august assembly, I see the power and the strength of unity. lt is you we must and will stand beside and behind. This is your future, and you must have an opportunity to shape it,” she said.

She added: “It is our duty and responsibility to create spaces for your voices to be heard, to share the power we are privileged to hold and we will. United we are unstoppable.”

As a Union in the Education Sector, GTU fully understands the power of education in empowering and transforming the lives of young people in building a sustainable tomorrow, GS Corr also said.

You can make your every desire fulfilled with your hard work and dedication. By the end of the Assembly, we hope you will formulate the final conclusions and eventually make some recommendations, which will be a benchmark for the future of the union. Be part of the solution instead of part of the problem. So if the union is going to get better, it's going to be up to you,” she further said.

She commended the participants for attending the session despite their busy schedule, saying young teachers are the pillars and energy of every given country.

The theme for the youth assembly was“Invest in Education for Quality Service Delivery:The Future Begins Now.”
