Stakeholders trained on Illegal Unreported, Unregulated fishing

A two-day capacity building training on Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing recently wrapped up at the Halalin Eco-Lodge in Kartong, Kombo South.

Organised by Gunjur Conservationists and Eco-tourism Association, African Fish and Wildlife Conservancy and Sanyang Youth for Environmental Protection and Development, the training was funded by Blue Ventures.

The participants at the event mainly from the coastal settlements and The Gambia Navy, discussed a wide range of issues affecting fish landing sites in The Gambia

At the closing ceremony, Ahmed Manjang, coordinator of Gunjur Conservation and Eco-tourism Association, applauded participants for their time and effort in attending the training.

 Senior Advocacy officer for Blue Ventures, Abdoulaye Ndiaye, thanked organisers and participants for their participation in the training.

For their part, participants called on government to equip security with materials to protect fish landing sites in the country.

They also called on Ministry of Fisheries to improve the landing site.

Participants stated that Ministry of Fisheries should involve fishermen in running the affairs of the fish landing sites.
