The transitional justice expert, who was only recently appointed to her current role at the Gambia’s justice department, is tasked with guiding the ministry through the implementation of recommendations outlined in the Government White Paper on the TRRC report.
Before taking on her current role, Ms. Persson's extensive experience included managing programs on elections, local governance, and rule of law, security sector reform, human rights, accountability, anti-corruption frameworks, parliamentary development, and civil society organisation participation in democratic processes.
Ms. Persson's role as a transitional justice and human rights specialist at the UNDP in The Gambia from 2018 to 2021, followed by her re-designation as Programme Specialist & Head of Governance from 2021 to 2023, navigated the complex landscape of transitional justice matters.
During this period, she led the UN in The Gambia in addressing issues related to transitional justice, contributing to research papers and analyses, and playing a pivotal role in the revision of the UN Secretary General's Guidance Note on Transitional Justice.
The young lawyer, who holds a B.A. in International Relations and Communication from Hult International Business School and an L.L.M. in Public International Law from Leiden University, brings a wealth of knowledge to her new role.
The academic background, coupled with her hands-on experience in various sectors, positions Ms. Persson as a formidable force in the collaborative efforts aimed at ensuring the effective implementation of the TRRC recommendations.
