Two Gambian security officers have been honoured by the Animal Welfare Advocates Association for their outstanding dedication to protecting animals. The recognition highlights the vital yet often overlooked role security personnel play in safeguarding vulnerable creatures, frequently going beyond the call of duty.

The Association has introduced a special award to acknowledge officers whose vigilance helps prevent cruelty before it occurs. The initiative underscores the link between compassion for animals and the creation of safer, more humane communities, while applauding the professionalism of officers who prioritise animal welfare.

Dr Buba Badjie of Veterinary Without Borders Sweden commended the awardees, stressing that animals, as sentient beings, deserve care that shields them from fear, pain, and hunger while ensuring their well-being.

Sheikh Hama Jaiteh, Imam of Dippa Kunda Central Mosque, emphasised humanity’s divine responsibility to protect nature and preserve ecological balance, describing humans as custodians entrusted with the care of all living things.

Among the honourees was Inspector Malang Camara of Yundum Police Station, who intercepted a commercial vehicle transporting rams in dangerous and inhumane conditions.

Also recognised was Firefighter 2031 Fatou Sowe of the Gambia Fire and Rescue Service, who bravely rescued a lamb trapped in a 10-metre-deep well in Basse. The incident occurred at approximately 11:14 a.m. on 24 March 2026.

Receiving his award, Inspector Camara reaffirmed his commitment to duty, stressing that his actions were guided by integrity and a deep respect for all living beings, including animals.

The awards highlight the crucial role security officers play as frontline defenders of animal welfare across communities. Their actions not only protect animals but also strengthen the values of compassion, responsibility and solidarity that underpin safer societies.
