The Gambia marked International Women’s Month with a vibrant trade exhibition, “Her Marketplace”, organised by the International Trade Centre (ITC) in collaboration with the United Nations and the Women Business Advocacy Group (WBAG). The event, held at Hendon Park Senegambia, celebrated women’s economic empowerment while advancing the global theme: “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls.”

The exhibition brought together government officials, development partners, women entrepreneurs, and civil society actors to reflect on progress made in promoting women’s rights, while addressing persistent challenges that continue to hinder women’s full participation in economic and social development.

A key highlight was the ‘Her Marketplace’ exhibition, which showcased products and innovations from women-led businesses. The platform enabled participants to connect with potential buyers, expand networks, and gain visibility for their enterprises.

WBAG Chairperson Fatoumatta Jawara, in her opening remarks, acknowledged the strides made in advancing women’s rights but stressed that many women still face barriers such as limited access to finance, markets, and capacity-building opportunities. She noted that the event also featured discussions on critical issues including access to education, healthcare, and climate-resilient livelihoods, underscoring the need for continued collaboration among stakeholders.

UN Gambia Resident Coordinator Karl Frédérick Paul reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting women through targeted initiatives that enhance skills development, entrepreneurship, and access to resources. He emphasised that empowering women economically is not only a matter of equality but also a driver of sustainable development.

“When women are given the tools and opportunities to succeed, they contribute significantly to the growth of families, communities, and national economies,” he said, calling for increased investment in women and girls alongside stronger policy frameworks to support inclusive participation.

Minister for Gender, Children and Social Welfare, Fatou Sanyang Kinteh, joined the global community in commemorating International Women’s Month, underscoring the Gambian government’s commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment.

She highlighted progress made in promoting women’s rights but acknowledged persistent challenges such as limited access to economic opportunities and decision-making spaces. She called for strengthened partnerships and sustained action to ensure that every woman and girl enjoys equal rights, protection, and opportunities to thrive.

While recognising achievements, she stressed that more efforts are required to close existing gaps, particularly for women and girls from vulnerable and marginalised communities.
