The Parliamentary Reporters Association of The Gambia (PRAG) over the weekend engaged journalists and civil society organisations on parliamentary reporting.

The training held at the National Assembly premises in Banjul, was supported by PNAfrica, African Parliamentary Press Network and National Assembly.

At the start of the forum, Khalipha Mbaye, Deputy Clerk for Legal Rights and Proceeding at the National Assembly, applauded the initiative and the establishment of the association.

He explained that parliament has a unique relationship with journalists as they are both representative of the people and they ensure that there is democracy and good governance in the country.

Mbaye assured of parliament's continued assistance to the association with all the necessary support they deserve to make sure they operate effectively and realize their objectives.

He equally advised participants to take the knowledge gained and implement in their work to avoid mis and malinformation.

Miss Ndey Ceesay, spokesperson for PRAG, underscored the role played by the Parliament in enhancing participatory democracy.

"It is therefore important to make sure journalists are able to have their capacity built on reporting on parliament. We are aware that even though we are journalists it is vital to have specific areas that you are known for which is why we identify the people that are recognised in reporting on parliament to train them on this subject matter.”

Ramatoulie Jawo, a reporter and participant from Kerr Fatu, thanked the association for the initiative and looks forward for more wonderful initiatives to help her and her fellows report efficiently on parliament.
