The event, which was held at Palma Rima Beach, was graced by the country’s finest artistes, comedians, drama groups, musical entertainment among others. The event was held under the theme ‘Girls on Tech Training Digital Safety and Gender Based Violence.’
At the event, Rohey Njie, representative from the Ministry of Health, advised girls to be aware of their reproductive health and be mindful of the negative effects of the social media.
“As this year’s theme is ‘Girls on Tech Training Digital Safety and Gender Based Violence,’ young girls should be aware of the how they make use of the internet especially the social medias. Use the internet to seek information by visiting informative sites to help in their educational career and have a positive impact in their lives.”
Marina Thorpe, programme assistant of PF Initiative, reminded participants that in this era of technology and innovation, every girl child needs to be aware of their safety especially when it comes to digital world.
She also lamented the growing effects of Gender Based Violence which is widespread, thus the need for all to be aware of its impact.
Ms. Thorpe explained that they chose to celebrate it at the beach because on Sunday many people go to the beach to have fun.
"Others are attacked at the beach, so it’s the place to target young people and this is the first time they are doing something like that to celebrate the international day of girl child. "
Prizes like Phones from Africell and megabytes bundles were won through some question and answer session with the audience.
