NARI field trials confirm effectiveness of Natural Clean Bio Fertilizer

The National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) has confirmed the effectiveness of Natural Clean Bio Fertilizer following initial field trials conducted on maize and tomatoes during both the dry and rainy farming seasons in The Gambia.

The trials were carried out at NARI’s research fields at the request of Bussk Group Africa, an advocacy group promoting environmentally sustainable farming practices in West Africa. The objective was to evaluate the fertilizer’s impact on soil health, crop growth, pest resistance, and yield performance under local agro-ecological conditions.

According to NARI, maize and tomatoes were selected based on specific agronomic considerations.

The trials spanned a six-month period, with tomatoes cultivated over a three-month cycle and maize over a separate three-month cycle. Multiple plots were established to compare Natural Clean Bio Fertilizer with commonly used alternatives, including poultry manure, NPK fertilizer, and a combination of NPK and Natural Clean.

Preliminary findings showed that crops treated with Natural Clean Bio Fertilizer demonstrated stronger vegetative growth, improved plant vigour, and healthier root systems compared to other treatments. Soil conditions in treated plots also showed enhanced biological activity, indicating improved nutrient availability and soil structure.

NARI researchers further observed that maize and tomato plants treated with Natural Clean developed faster and more uniformly within the designated trial periods.

Yield analysis revealed that plots treated exclusively with Natural Clean Bio Fertilizer outperformed all other treatments. Maize plots recorded higher grain output, while tomato plants produced increased fruit size and volume. These results were achieved without the application of synthetic chemicals.

One of the most notable outcomes of the trials was the complete absence of pest infestation on plots treated with Natural Clean Bio Fertilizer. In contrast, varying levels of pest presence were observed on plots treated with conventional inputs.

Presenting the findings to stakeholders from both the public and private agricultural sectors at NARI’s headquarters on 2 January 2026, Dr Jalamang Camara , director of Cropping Systems and Agroforestry directorate, described the preliminary results as highly encouraging. He noted that the trials confirmed Natural Clean’s capacity to improve crop performance, restore soil health, and increase yields under Gambian farming conditions.

NARI stated that the findings align with national efforts to promote organic and sustainable agricultural inputs. While emphasizing that the results are preliminary, the institute noted that they provide a strong basis for expanded on-farm trials and broader farmer adoption.

Natural Clean Bio Fertilizer is a microbial soil enhancement product formulated with naturally occurring microorganisms. It is hundred percent organic with zero chemicals. It is designed for application through seed treatment, soil application, foliar spraying, or drip irrigation.

Following the successful initial trials, Mr Ezenwa Iroaganachi, Regional Director of Bussk Group Africa, said further engagement with government, policymakers, agricultural projects, extension services, and farmers would be necessary to scale adoption. He expressed expectations that the government, in line with its organic fertilizer policy thrust, would encourage farmers to adopt the product and consider procuring it for distribution to farmers.

NARI reaffirmed its commitment to evidence-based evaluation of agricultural technologies that enhance food security, increase farmer incomes, and promote environmental sustainability in The Gambia.
