The Honourable Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST), Professor Pierre Gomez, recently met with the newly appointed Executive Directors of the nation’s key education funds to outline his vision for their strategic roles.

The meeting, held on Tuesday 21st October at the ministry’s headquarters, served as a platform for Professor Gomez to welcome the directors and gain insight into their initial plans. The primary objective was to align their strategies with the Ministry’s overarching goals and determine how best to facilitate their success.

The newly appointed Executive Directors are: Dr Samba Bah, Executive Director of the Student Revolving Loan Scheme (SRLS), Professor Momodou Sallah, Executive Director of the National Research and Innovation Fund (NRIF), and Dr Jorjoh Ndure-Tambedou, Executive Director of the Tertiary and Higher Education Trust Fund (THETFund).

In his welcoming remarks, Professor Gomez commended the appointees for their dedication to national service and acknowledged the significance of their transition into these pivotal roles. He emphasised that their work would lay a lasting foundation for future generations, with the nation poised to benefit from their interventions.

“Your leadership will shape the future of higher education and research in The Gambia,” he stated. “We are confident that your contributions will leave a legacy of excellence and innovation.”

Professor Gomez assured the Executive Directors of the Ministry’s full support, granting them the autonomy to operate within legal frameworks to fulfil their mandates effectively.

Meanwhile, the Ministry is actively operationalising the agencies and has submitted proposed board compositions to the Office of the President for formal constitution. The boards will include a diverse mix of ex officials, members from relevant government ministries, as well as representatives from the private sector and student bodies, ensuring inclusive and balanced oversight.

The Executive Directors are expected to officially assume their roles on 1st December, marking a significant step forward in strengthening The Gambia’s higher education and research landscape.
