Media Academy for Journalism and Communication (MAJaC) on Tuesday launched a project to enhance ethical reporting and nurturing responsible journalism in The Gambia in partnership with Freedom House.

The project titled “Empowering Ethical Journalism Excellence, Elevating Reporting Capacities, and Strengthening Media Integrity” under the theme of “Nurturing Responsible Journalism” seeks to equip journalists and media practitioners with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate ethical dilemmas in reporting effectively.

The event marked the commencement of an initiative aimed at fostering trustworthy and responsible journalism while professionalising media practices to effectively address ethical dilemmas and news reporting challenges.

James Badjie, director of training at MAJaC in his remarks said ethical journalism serves as the bedrock of democracy. He added that it upholds accountability, transparency, fosters truth, informs public discourse and safeguards against misinformation and censorship.

He pointed out that journalists hold immense power and responsibilities, noting that their reporting shapes public opinion, influences policy decisions and ultimately helps maintain trust in institutions.

Mr Badjie observed that the advancement of new technologies and the proliferation of media outlets has its pros and cons in the dissemination of inaccurate or misinformation of information in societies, noting that that is why MAJaC came into existence in 2010 through the Gambia Press Union (GPU).

“MAJaC aims to strengthen democracy through high quality professional trainings for media and communication specialists,” he said, adding that over the years, MAJaC has collaborated with many reputable media houses and institutions to equip the capacity of journalists and civil society organisations.

“Through practical exercises, case studies and interactive sessions, we explore global ethical principles, conflict solution strategies and responsible reporting practices, but our training goes beyond the theories, we delve into real life scenarios, addressing the ethical dilemma you may encounter in your daily work through hands on activities and journalistic productions. You will not only deepen your understanding but also hone your analytical and critical thinking skills at MAJaC,” he further said.

Demba Kandeh, deputy chief of party for Freedom House expressed delight in collaborating with MAJaC, which he described as one of the finest journalism training institutions in The Gambia.

He added that Freedom House with support from USAID continue to conduct various trainings to promote democracy and foster the culture of accountability and transparency in The Gambia.

Musa Sarjo, a representative of the Gambia Press Union (GPU) said in an age where misinformation abounds, it is imperative to uphold the principles of accuracy, transparency, and integrity in journalism.
