The Gambian Talents Multimedia Training for Youth Employment (GTTV) recently graduated 40 students who have completed their training in multimedia and communication skills.

The students had received training in several areas, including graphic design, web design, computer maintenance and repair, public speaking, marketing, accounting, journalism, and videography.

Pa Ousman Joof, in his remarks at the ceremony held at the Gambia Training and Hospitality Institute said the initiative began in 2018, adding that since then, they have trained over 500 youth aged 18-30 for free.

He said around 30 trainees have been hired by his media house while the rest are working with other media outlets or self-employed.

“Through our program, these young people who might have been on the streets abusing drugs or end up in the criminal justice system for committing avoidable crimes have an opportunity to learn entry-level skills that lead them to gain permanent employment and travelling to the length and breadth of The Gambia, Senegal and beyond. Some who travel abroad have the opportunity to continue a career they kicked start at GTTV. Thus, we take pride in tapping and nurturing Gambian talents beyond her borders,” Joof stated.

Momodou Jawo, board member at the Gambia Press Union spoke about the importance of adhering to media laws and ethics as a journalist. He emphasised that journalism is one of the noblest professions, and journalists who work in line with the profession's principles should uphold the ethics of journalism.

“Journalism ethics are based on truth, accuracy and objectivity. To maintain professionalism, do not allow your work to be used in a way that could damage your career. The "Cherno Jallow Charter of Ethics for Journalists" was introduced in 2016, named after a veteran journalist nicknamed "Ethics." This code of conduct is based on global journalism standards and tailored to local contexts. Follow it to ensure ethical journalism,” Mr Jawo advised.

Dr. Isatou Touray, executive director for GAMCOTRAP promised to appoint one of the female graduates as an intern communication officer at GAMCOTRAP.

Similarly, Mayor Ahmed Talib Bensuda pledged a position at the KMC library to another graduate. The mayor encouraged the graduates to use their talents and work hard for success.
