The University of Education, The Gambia (UEG) has officially unveiled its first degree programmes, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s higher education sector.

The launch signals the university’s bold transition into its full mandate as a specialised institution dedicated to excellence in teacher education, professional development, research, innovation, and national service.

The unveiling ceremony, held on Tuesday 19 May 2026 at the Brikama campus, introduced a wide range of undergraduate programmes including: B.Sc. Ed. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Agriculture, Geography; B.A. English Education, French Education, History Education, Islamic Studies; and B.Sc. Economics Education

Responding to emerging national needs and student demand, UEG has also introduced new undergraduate courses such as B.A. Civic Education, B.A. Education (Arabic Language), B.Ed. Primary Education, B.Ed. Early Childhood Education, and B.Sc. Science with specialisations in Home Management, Food and Nutrition, and Clothing and Textile.

Postgraduate programmes unveiled include M.Ed. Educational Administration and Management, MSc. Education Management Information System (EMIS), M.Ed. Educational Measurement and Evaluation, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE).

Speaking at the ceremony, UEG Vice Chancellor Professor Adamu Ahmed described the occasion as a landmark achievement, introducing innovative courses offered for the first time by a University of Education in The Gambia.

“This milestone is the result of extensive planning, national consultations, institutional reforms, policy direction, and stakeholder engagement. It reflects the unwavering commitment of the Government, partners, staff, and all those who believe in the future of education in The Gambia,” Prof Ahmed said.

He noted that UEG is strengthening its institutional capacity through collaboration with the University of The Gambia, particularly with the transition of staff from UTG’s School of Education to UEG. This, he explained, provides a strong foundation of expertise, experience, and continuity.

Prof Ahmed emphasised UEG’s commitment to producing competent educators, innovative thinkers, ethical leaders, skilled professionals, and transformative citizens who will contribute meaningfully to national development. He further outlined the university’s medium- and long-term vision to expand into graduate and doctoral programmes.

“We are building not only a university for today, but a university for generations to come,” he declared.

UEG will also continue to offer Community-Based Policing and Security Studies, Certificate in Catering, and Advanced Diploma in Library and Information Science.

On admission requirements, Prof Ahmed explained that applicants from secondary schools must obtain a minimum of five WASSCE credits, including English Language and Mathematics. For in-service applicants seeking professional upgrading, a minimum CGPA of 3.0 is required.
