Alieu Jobe, who recently participated in this global forum in New York, acknowledged the importance of Area Councils and Municipalities working with the Ministry of Local Government, Lands, and Religious Affairs to advance land allocation and invest in low-cost housing initiatives
Also, the UN forum brought together local and regional leaders to discuss ways to advance the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
At the forum, Jobe recounted pressing issues affecting Gambian communities, which range from affordable housing, to social welfare and public transportation.
He highlighted the need for inclusive governance and transparent management of resources to address these challenges, pointing out the need to prioritise social protection for vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities and underprivileged citizens.
The co-founder of Civic Bantaba also pointed out the potential for collaboration among councils to develop local transport initiatives, such as community buses, to reduce commuters’ difficulties and stabilise transport costs.
Commenting on the importance of transparent and accountable governance, he equally cited that Local Government Act requires councils to reinvest at least 60% of local revenue into community development.
Jobe reaffirmed his organisation’s commitment to promoting citizen participation, youth-led advocacy and meaningful reform at the grassroots level.
He maintains that global progress begins with strong, inclusive local systems, adding that together, Gambians can build a future where every individual is seen, heard and supported.
