The ‘give back to your school as an Alumnus by the simple act of Replacing your desk and chair for only D3,000’ is pioneered by Abdoulie M. Touray (Baax).
The desks and chairs inscribed with names and professions of the class of 1970 aims to inspire students to aspire for excellence in all their endeavors.
Abdoulie M. Touray (Baax), initiator of “Replace your desk and chair at your Alma Mater” in his remarks at the ceremony said they hope and pray that with the initiative, Gambians will embrace the spirit of giving back starting in a modest way by replacing their desks and chairs at their Alma Mater for the betterment of the educational transformation of our country.
He noted that they are reminded of the adage of making a living from what you earn, but you make a life from what you give.
Amicoleh Mbye, Chairperson of Armitage Senior Secondary School board applauded the initiative of the Class of 1970 in complementing government’s efforts.
She pointed out that the gesture is a clear testimony that Armitage alumni recognises the values of staying connected with the school at every stage, and are inspiring increased pride and greater understanding of the school’s mission and impact.
She stated that with the result of the engagement, pride and support will benefit every aspect of the school and empower students to achieve holistic quality education considering the uniqueness of Armitage as the only government boarding school.
Alhagie Jallow, Principal Education Officer at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in deputising for his Permanent Secretary said Armitage has been known to always produce quality, adding that a lot of people in key positions in both public and private sector attended Armitage Senior Secondary School.Thus, he said to maintain and enhance quality at the school, they need on hands on deck.
He said the gesture will go a long way in improving an enabling environment for quality teaching and learning at the school. He also urged beneficiaries to make best use of the donated furniture and well as maintain them.
Saikuna Sibi, Principal of Armitage Senior Secondary School on behalf of his school’s management, parents, teachers and students thanked the Class of 1970 for their generosity.
He added that the furniture will make life in the classroom easy for students. He also assured donors that they will put the furniture into good use and also ensure its sustainability.
