For nearly four years, the Allen Street Dembaa group has been actively promoting community engagement in Banjul. Over the weekend, members organised a major cleaning exercise to improve their neighbourhood, clearing debris, litter and waste along the busy street.

The initiative was chaired by Modou N. Savage, a long-time resident who has been at the forefront of mobilising volunteers for community projects. Among those who joined the effort was Dawda Samba, alongside other committed residents determined to restore cleanliness and order to their environment.

Speaking to journalists, Chairman Savage emphasised the group’s commitment to civic responsibility. “For almost four years, we have asked ourselves, ‘What can we do for our country?’ Cleaning our streets is one way to make a tangible difference,” he said.

The exercise received vital support from Comium Gambia, which provided funding, branded T-shirts and other resources. The National Environment Agency (NEA) also contributed cleaning materials to ensure the success of the initiative.

Local councillor Alagie Sarr joined the drive and praised the group’s dedication. “It is the responsibility of every resident to keep our environment clean. I am proud to see community members leading by example,” he remarked.

The Allen Street Dembaa group hopes their action would inspire other neighbourhoods across Banjul to organise similar exercises, promoting cleaner streets and fostering a stronger sense of communal pride.
