His Excellency the Vice President Muhammad B.S. Jallow on Wednesday 15th July 2026, officially inaugurated the Board of the National Population Secretariat, marking the formal operationalisation of the Secretariat as a semi-autonomous government agency and a major milestone in strengthening population governance in The Gambia.

Speaking on behalf of His Excellency President Adama Barrow, VP Jallow reaffirmed government's unwavering commitment to strengthening public institutions and congratulated Board Chairman Lamin Nyabally, Director General Mariama Fanneh, and all Board members on their appointments, describing population data as indispensable for informed decision-making, education, healthcare, employment, food security and sustainable development.

Chairman Lamin Nyabally, in his acceptance remarks, thanked President Barrow and VP Jallow for the trust reposed in the Board and pledged to help transform The Gambia's youthful population with a median age of just 20 into a real demographic dividend through quality education, skills training, entrepreneurship and job creation.

He also raised deep concern over the loss of young lives through irregular migration, calling for stronger partnership between government, development partners, civil society and the private sector to expand safe opportunities at home.

Director General Mariama Fanneh noted that the Board was established under the 2025 Act of Parliament (assented to on 30th January 2026), which also created the National Population Commission chaired by the Vice President and the National Observatory for the Demographic Dividend, reflecting a true whole-of-government approach to harnessing the potential of Gambia's youth bulge.
