For many decades, residents of Sare Koli Kunda in the Upper River Region (URR) felt isolated as residents in the remote URR community endured endless challenges on a daily basis. Since the country attained its independence in 1965, facilities like electricity, good roads or even standard water facilities, are a far-fetched dream for many in the area.

For most of them, the only time they set their eyes on good standard roads or access electricity is only when visiting towns like Basse and/or traveling to the Kombos.

For years, people in this remote community felt disconnected from the numerous rapid developments taking shape in other parts of the country, even though they pay taxes.

The project, under the Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC), is keen on delivering on time so as to make accessibility even-easier as compared to the past.

With the ongoing construction of a good standard road, water facility and electricity passing through and connecting it to other satellite villages, many local dwellers are indeed hopeful that development is coming at last.

They thanked the current government, under the leadership of President Adama Barrow, for spearheading this life-changing transformation.

For Omar Bah, an elderly man believed to be in his late eighties, it is a dream come true. He thanked Allah for living to witness such a development initiative in his village.

He recalled that since the country attained its independence, they have been looking forward to such development initiative, but to no avail.

Now with the availability of electricity and good roads, he said life has been made easier for them as never before.

Bah, went on to share some of the challenges they encountered in accessing health care facility in Baja Kunda especially during rainy season.

"Our women here especially pregnant women faced great challenges in accessing health facilities. Sometimes, when it rains the area is almost cut off from the rest of the region, due to its ‘unmotorable’ nature. Even bicycles and donkey carts can’t access it. But that has changed as even during odd hours, one can leave and go about their business and come back."

He added; "Most of the students attend schools in Baja Kunda or Vellingara and most of the time, during rainy season, they found numerous challenges due to the deplorable state of the road. Now, that this road construction has reached us, I want to thank the president and all those who made it possible. We are indeed delighted with this development."

He underscored the importance of good road in the health and wellbeing of people, recalling that in the past, residents found it difficult to access vital services especially when it rains.

The road, he said, would greatly foster movement of not only people but also commerce in the area, adding that all that they used to find difficult has now been made easy, thanks to the new road.

Also, rearing their livestock was a problem as many migrate to nearby communities mainly due to non-availability of animal drinking points. But he said that is history now as they have such facilities in the area.

Another resident of Sare Koli Kunda, Gibril Bah, expressed similar sentiments, further thanking the current government for the initiative.

He lauded the construction of this new road, which he said, has linked their community to other communities like Maka Masireh and Vellingara in the northern edge of the border.

On Sunday, the minster of Works, Transport and Infrastructure, Ebrima Sillah inspected the area to assess the level of ongoing road works.  On the visit to the area, residents warmly welcomed the minister and delegation.

During a brief interaction with the elders, Minister Sillah explained the rationale behind the visit, which he said, was to gauge the level of works.

Works Minister also assured the community elders that the ongoing road works is just the tip of the iceberg, as more development initiatives are in the offing.

He made reference to the animal drinking points created in the area, electricity and now road, adding government also sometimes help farmers with seeds.

Others who spoke to this medium detailed similar harrowing stories, thanking the current government for considering their plight.
