The Gambia Police Force has secured a conviction against Dawda Jawara, one of the youth arrested for dangerous driving popularly known as drifting or joyriding around the Kanifing community on June 11, 2025.

The judgement, delivered by the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on June 16, marks a significant step in law enforcement’s campaign to curb reckless behaviour on the roads.

Dawda Jawara was found guilty on two counts of traffic-related offences. On Count One, he was fined D5,000, and on Count Two, he was fined D25,000. Failure to pay these fines will result in three years and five years imprisonment respectively.

The case stemmed from a high-speed incident on June 11, when Jawara and others engaged in dangerous drifting maneuvers in the Kanifing area. According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sisawo, officers had just concluded a programme at GRTS when they heard the distinct sound of vehicles skidding nearby. Their response triggered a 15-minute police chase, which ended when the suspects crashed into another vehicle.

“The youths attempted to flee, but we gave chase. When the vehicle was finally stopped, the surrounding crowd rallied behind us,” ASP Sisawo said. “This shows the public’s growing frustration with these illegal acts. Many believe these boys are often spared due to their privileged backgrounds but that narrative is over. We are determined to set a clear example.”

The Gambia Police Force, in a statement following the court’s verdict, reaffirmed its commitment to restoring order and safeguarding the community. “We will not relent in our efforts to protect lives and curb reckless driving,” the statement read.

With increased enforcement efforts underway, authorities are urging parents and guardians to play a role in discouraging such behavior among young drivers. The police warn that similar operations will continue across other regions of the country to ensure that law and order are upheld.
