The ceremony marked the official commencement of a critical infrastructure project aimed at improving drainage, enhancing road safety, facilitating transportation, and contributing to the socio-economic development of the community and surrounding areas.
The culvert project, which has been awarded to Smateq Construction and is fully funded by the Government of The Gambia, comes after more than two decades of hardship experienced by the people of Banni following the collapse of the bridge that once connected them to their rice fields and fertile agricultural lands.
For over 20 years, residents have been cut off from these productive farmlands, leaving vast areas of arable land inaccessible and underutilized. The situation has had a significant impact on agricultural production, food security, and the livelihoods of many families within the community.
Speaking at the event, Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, Managing Director, National Roads Authority ( NRA), highlighted the importance of the project in restoring access to farmland, boosting agricultural productivity, and improving the living conditions of residents.
The foundation-stone-laying ceremony, held in Banni Village in the North Bank Region, brought together the Governor of the region, the Managing Director of the National Roads Authority and members of his management team, local government officials, traditional leaders, development partners, contractors, and residents from Banni and neighboring communities.
Once completed, the culvert is expected to significantly improve connectivity, support economic activities, and strengthen the resilience of the community by ensuring reliable access to agricultural lands throughout the year.
