Gov’t launches first phase of new biometric national ID card rollout

The Government of The Gambia, through the Ministry of Interior, has announced the commencement of the first phase of public registration and issuance of the new Biometric National Identity Cards for citizens aged 18 years and above.

Registration began on Tuesday, 4th August 2026 at designated enrolment centres across the Greater Banjul Area. The areas covered in this phase are: Banjul, Kanifing, Bundung, Abuko, Brusubi, Sanyang and Brikama, where demand for registration is expected to be highest.

 

Nationwide Rollout Schedule

Following the Greater Banjul Area, registration will be extended as follows:

- Monday, 7th September 2026: Sibanor in Foni, West Coast Region and Jarra Soma, Lower River Region

- Friday, 11th September 2026: North Bank Region - Barra, Kerewan and Farafenni; and Central River Region-North - Kaur

- Monday, 21st September 2026: Central River Region-South - Janjanbureh; and Upper River Region - Basse and Fatoto

 

Registration Fees and Exemptions

 

The fee for a first-time National Identity Card is

D450, payable at any Ecobank branch nationwide.

 

The following categories will be processed free of charge during this rollout:

1.  Holders of a valid and unexpired National ID Card issued by The Gambia Immigration Department

2.  Holders of enrolment printouts issued by The Gambia Immigration Department

 

Application forms are free and can be downloaded from the Ministry of Interior website: www.moi.gov.gm and The Gambia Immigration Department portal: www.gid.gov.gm, effective today.

 

Required Documents

Applicants must present at least one of the following:

- A valid Gambian Passport

- A Gambian Birth Certificate 

- A valid or expired National ID Card previously issued by The Gambia Immigration Department

 

Applicants without any of the above must be identified and vouched for by both the Alkalo (Village Head) and Seyfo (District Chief) of their place of residence or origin.

1.  Kanifing ID Card Centre

2.  Banjul Immigration HQ  

3.  Bundung Police Station ID Card Centre

4.  Brusubi Police Station ID Card Centre

5.  Abuko Immigration Office

6.  Brikama ID Card Centre

7.  Sanyang Immigration Office

 

The Government urges all eligible citizens to register at the centre serving their area of domicile and to cooperate fully with registration officials to ensure the process is seamless, orderly, secure and efficient.
