The report highlights a rise in violent crimes such as murder and armed robbery, which continue to threaten the right to life. It notes several incidents in 2024, including stabbings in Westfield, Mansea Beach, and Banjulinding, as well as the discovery of an unidentified body in Foni Kampant, with investigations still pending.
While the report acknowledges no cases of enforced disappearances or extrajudicial killings by State agents since 2017, it documents multiple complaints of torture and ill-treatment involving law enforcement officials. These include allegations against police, immigration, and paramilitary officers, some of which led to disciplinary actions after NHRC investigations.
The Commission also drew attention to ongoing cases related to the AKI tragedy that claimed the lives of nearly 70 children, the rise of drug abuse among youth, and human rights concerns linked to unregulated mining and fisheries. It further noted delays in justice delivery, prolonged detentions beyond the 72-hour constitutional limit, and the use of the Public Order Act to restrict peaceful assembly.
Progress was, however, recorded in legislative reforms, including the enactment of the Special Accountability Mechanism (TRRC) Act 2024 and the Special Prosecutor’s Office Act 2024. The NHRC commended these steps while emphasising the challenges in implementing the Government White Paper on the TRRC’s recommendations.
NHRC Chairperson Emmanuel D. Joof reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the protection of rights. He reminded that under Section 33 of the NHRC Act 2017, the Commission is required to submit its annual report to the National Assembly and make it public to ensure national awareness and scrutiny.
Mr Joof also underscored the critical role of the media in advancing human rights, urging journalists to uphold accuracy, fairness, and professionalism in their reporting.
Following his remarks, NHRC officers presented detailed overviews of the 2024 State of Human Rights Report and the monitoring status of the TRRC White Paper, followed by a discussion session with the media
