The event serves as a platform for reviewing progress exchanging experiences and shaping the future of malaria and NTDs research under the MARCAD Plus initiative with sessions covering research methodology, scientific writing, leadership mentoring, science diplomacy and personal development while special conferences explore the feasibility of malaria elimination and the challenges and opportunities in African-led research and training
Established in 2015, MARCAD is a consortium of African institutions committed to empowering a new generation of scientists by equipping them with the skills, knowledge and mentorship needed to lead high-impact research in malaria control and elimination, focusing on key areas such as vector and parasite resistance, immunology, molecular biology, climate change transmission, interruption and social science
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr Alfred Amambua-Ngwa, a senior investigator at MRCG, reflected on his 19-year journey in The Gambia and underscored the critical role of African scientists in advancing health research. He highlighted the consortium’s dedication to capacity development and its open access facilities that welcome fellows from across the continent
Professor Alima Abdallah, chair of the MARCAD Plus External Advisory Board, emphasised the significance of the programme in building a sustainable African-led scientific ecosystem and stressed the urgent need for African governments to invest in research as global uncertainties continue to challenge institutions in the Global South, calling MARCAD a powerful vision anchored in deliberate pillars and dedicated to training world-class African scientists.
Denis Chopera, a senior programme manager at the Science for Africa Foundation, expressed anticipation for insightful discussions and cutting-edge research throughout the meeting and encouraged participants to actively share their experiences and innovations in malaria science
