Yugo Sowe, the man accused of brutally hacking his wife, Amie Sowe, with a cutlass in Jalanbang on 16 November 2023, returned to the witness stand on Tuesday before Justice Ebrima Jaiteh as Defence witness one, placing himself far from the scene of the attack, indicating he had no involvement in the crime.

Sowe is facing five criminal charges, including, attempted murder, grievous harm, acts intended to cause grievous harm, wounding and domestic violence.

In his testimony, Sowe told the court that on the night his wife was chopped with a cutlass, he was not at Amie’s residence. Instead, he claimed he was asleep at the home of his second wife.

According to him, he and his second wife were sleeping when someone began knocking on the door. His wife alerted him, and before opening the door he asked who it was. He said the caller identified himself as Wandifa.

Sowe said that when he opened the door, he saw Wandifa standing with a bicycle, one Sowe claims belongs to him. He said Wandifa informed him that his wife had been found “chopped up” with a cutlass and urged him to go to the scene.

Sowe testified that before leaving, he told Wandifa to wait because there was someone nearby with a car who could help. He went to inform his younger brother, Alieu, and explained that they needed Musa’s vehicle to rush to his injured wife. Although Alieu doubted Musa would answer due to family responsibilities, Sowe said he called him and Musa responded.

He said he then traveled with Musa, Musa’s father, and Alieu toward Amie’s compound. As they approached, they found a crowd gathered at the gate. The crowd reportedly stopped them, insisting they wait for anti-crime officers.

When anti-crime finally arrived, Sowe said someone in the crowd accused him of being the “old man” who attacked Amie. He was immediately handcuffed and taken to where the injured woman lives.

Sowe told the court that officers transported Amie still crying together with the mattress to Brikama Hospital. She was later referred to Ndemban Clinic and he the accused and police went to the police station.

Sowe confirmed that police later searched his property while he was handcuffed. He said officers recovered two trousers, a shirt, and a cutlass from under his bed, as well as two shirts found on the bed.

When asked by defence counsel F.C. Anyanwu whether he had any idea why his wife would accuse him of such a horrific act, Sowe referenced a previous domestic dispute. He told the court that one day Amie had been shouting in the compound, and he told her he was divorcing her. An imam, however, sent a messenger telling him such a divorce declaration was not valid and that he must instead bring her to live with him and his other wife.

The matter was adjourned until 10th December 2025.
