In his Lent statement, Darboe says Lent calls for one to walk in humility, compassion, and self-examination, while pointing out that it also reminds us of the power of hope and redemption.
Darboe’s Lent Statement reads below:
To All Christians in The Gambia
Brothers and Sisters in Christ, as the holy season of Lent begins, I extend my warmest wishes to all Christians across The Gambia. May this sacred time of reflection and prayer deepen your faith and bring you closer to God’s boundless love and grace.
Lent calls us to walk in humility, compassion, and self-examination. It is a season to embrace sacrifice, not only through fasting but also by opening our hearts to the needs of others. Let us use these 40 days to strengthen our commitment to justice, forgiveness, and service—values that transcend faiths and unite us as Gambians.
In a world often divided by strife, Lent reminds us of the power of hope and redemption. As we confront challenges in our nation—economic hardship, social inequality, and the need for unity—I urge Christians to lead by example. Let us extend kindness to the marginalized, feed the hungry, and advocate for peace.
This Lent, I pray for harmony among Gambians of all beliefs. Just as Ramadan and Lent overlap in their call for spiritual discipline and charity, let us celebrate our shared humanity. Our diversity is a gift; let it inspire collaboration, not division, as we work toward a brighter future for generations to come.
May God’s grace guide you through this holy season. May your sacrifices bear fruit in renewed faith, and may Easter’s dawn bring you joy, healing, and the triumph of light over darkness.
With warm regards and prayers for a blessed Lenten journey.
