The last surviving member of the Gambian delegation to the Marlborough Conference that negotiated the country’s independence from Britain died at his home in Banjul.

Alhaji Muhammadu Cadi Cham, affectionately known as M.C. Cham died on Friday 28 November 2025 and was buried on Saturday 29 November. He was 88 years old.

With a career spanning multiple decades, M.C. Cham's contributions to The Gambia's development have been multifaceted and far-reaching, according to Hassan Gibril, a retired public servant.

“As a Cabinet Minister in the first Republic, he held various portfolios, including Information and Tourism, Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, Finance, and Works and Communication.”

“His leadership and vision helped shape the nation's policies and programs, earning him the respect and admiration of his peers and his people,” Hassan Gibril said.

“One of his most notable achievements was the introduction of Oustasses (Qur'anic teachers) into the formal school system, a move that helped bridge the gap between traditional and modern education.”

“His commitment to education and youth development was evident in his passionate advocacy for the empowerment of young Gambians.”

“Moreover, he was the longest serving President of the Gambia Football Association (1966 - 1977).”

“As a founding father of The Gambia, M.C. Cham's legacy extends beyond his Ministerial roles.”
