The Beakanyang Executive Director Nfamara Jawneh says human rights education is not just a subject but the foundation upon which “we build a world characterised by justice, equality and freedom.”

Mr Jawneh made the remarks during the opening of a 2-day inter-schools human rights quiz competition organised by Beakanyang with support from the Embassy of Switzerland in Senegal.

The theme for the competition held at Baobab Hotel is reflecting on the universal declaration of human rights. The competition brought together 15 schools from across the country.

He added that the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNHR) and the upcoming International Human Rights Day on 10th December 2023 will serve as a time to reflect on the progress made, acknowledge the challenges ahead, most importantly, to empower the future generation with the knowledge and values encapsulated in the UNHR.

Marie Adams, representative of United Nations, said The Gambia is making significant efforts to transition to good governance, democratic consolidation and respect for human rights.

She described children as tomorrow’s leaders, noting that they are grateful for the initiative that enhances the capacity of the children in understanding their rights.

She thanked and applauded stakeholders in the various actions taken to promote and protect children’s rights.
