In this regard, the Gambia Police Force (GPF), in collaboration with sister security services, convened a community stakeholders’ meeting in Jinack, covering Kajatta and Jattako villages.
The engagement, held under Operation Restore Confidence in Jinack, brought together security agencies, community elders, youth representatives, women leaders, and religious figures to discuss the security, social, and humanitarian implications of irregular migration and to reinforce collective responsibility in safeguarding lives.
The meeting was attended by representatives from:
- The Gambia Police Force (GPF)
- State Intelligence Services (SIS)
- Gambia Immigration Department (GID)
- Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG)
- The Gambia Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS)
Addressing the gathering, the Officer Commanding Kerewan PIU commended the elders and residents for their cooperation and emphasised the dangers of irregular migration, noting its devastating impact on families, communities, and national security. He strongly discouraged any form of facilitation, harbouring of persons and urged residents to remain vigilant and law-abiding.
Security representatives clarified that recent interventions in Jinack were intelligence-led and aimed at saving lives rather than targeting communities. It was emphasised that irregular migration networks largely benefit external facilitators who exploit local communities, while exposing young people to extreme danger.
Representatives of sister services reinforced the importance of adherence to the rule of law and the constitutional duty of all citizens to protect life and property. The Gambia Immigration Department highlighted the risks posed by undocumented migration and called for the proactive reporting of undocumented foreigners for proper documentation and lawful processing.
Community elders, youth leaders, women representatives, and religious figures welcomed the engagement and expressed appreciation for the Government’s intervention. They acknowledged the gravity of the irregular migration crisis, shared concerns over missing youths, and pledged to work closely with security agencies to prevent the use of Jinack as a transit point for irregular journeys.
Speakers from the community appealed for sustained engagement, security presence, and support to address underlying vulnerabilities.
The Police Command reassured the community that all actions taken were guided by law and respect for human rights, and that individuals in custody are being treated humanely. Community members were encouraged to serve as ambassadors for lawful conduct and to guide young people away from dangerous migration routes.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment between security agencies and the Jinack community to:
- Strengthen cooperation and information sharing
- Reject irregular migration and related criminal activities
- Uphold the rule of law
- Protect lives and preserve community stability
The Gambia Police Force reaffirms its commitment to sustained community engagement, intelligence-led operations, and collaborative approaches in addressing irregular migration, while working with citizens to promote safety, dignity, and national security.
