The government has announced plans to release the Local Government Commission of Inquiry report and its White Paper response before the end of August.

Minister for Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs, Hon. Hamat N.K. Bah, disclosed this during a question and answer session at the National Assembly on Wednesday.

The minister was responding to a question on when the report of the inquiry would be made public and when the recommendations from the investigation would be implemented.

Bah told lawmakers that the commission had completed its work and submitted its report to President Adama Barrow.

He said the government is currently preparing a White Paper, which will outline its official response to the findings and recommendations.

The Local Government Commission of Inquiry was established to investigate the conduct and operations of all eight local government councils between May 2018 and January 2023.

According to the minister, the government is reviewing the findings before deciding on the next steps.

"The government has taken receipt of the commission's report and is currently preparing a White Paper setting out the government's considered response to the findings and recommendations of the commission," Bah said.

He explained that the White Paper process involves reviewing the commission's findings, examining accountability issues, and determining how the recommendations should be handled.

The minister informed the Assembly that both the inquiry report and the government's White Paper will be presented to lawmakers and made available to the public before the end of August.

"The government intends to place both the commission's report and the government White Paper before this August Assembly on or before the end of August, and both documents will be published for the public," he said.

When asked about the timeline for implementing the recommendations, Bah said it would be difficult to provide one before the completion of the White Paper.

He explained that the White Paper will determine which recommendations the government accepts and the actions required to implement them.

However, the minister assured lawmakers that the government remains ready and willing to implement recommendations that are approved through the process.

The release of the report is expected to provide the public with more details on the findings of the inquiry and possible reforms regarding the management and accountability of local government councils.
